Our verdict on JD.com
JD.com brings the Chinese online retailer and marketplace to Android, with a web option for shoppers who want to browse a broad catalog, search for products and place orders. The app is free to download, and in-app checkout and order tracking support the shopping process from purchase through shipping. It suits marketplace buyers who value delivery choices and, where available, collection through pickup stations. It is less suited to shoppers who need the same delivery or collection options for every order, since eligibility depends on location and order.
Delivery is a notable part of the offer: shoppers can choose fast or scheduled delivery, and the category listing includes same-day delivery. The product description qualifies fast delivery and pickup by location and order, so these options are not universal. Shipping-status tracking is available through the website and mobile apps. Eligible orders can also be collected at pickup stations or stores. Buyers who want a delivery or collection choice before committing should check the options shown for the specific order.
JD Plus is a separate paid membership that offers shopping rebates and other benefits, while shopping promotions and discounts are also available in the app. The app itself is free to download, but product and delivery costs vary. According to JD.com’s published description, a general public subscription price for JD Plus is not provided. That leaves membership value dependent on a buyer’s shopping patterns and available benefits. JD.com is a fit for shoppers who want a broad marketplace with app ordering, shipment tracking and conditional pickup options; those who need consistently available pickup or fast delivery should consider whether their location and likely orders qualify.
