Our verdict on IBM Kubecost
IBM Kubecost is a Kubernetes-focused cloud cost management product for teams operating containerized workloads. It provides cost allocation across clusters, namespaces, workloads and containers, along with dashboards, cloud billing visibility and cost data APIs. Deployment options include a cloud service and self-hosted Kubernetes installations, including managed, bootstrapped, on-premises and air-gapped environments. Teams working across AWS, Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure can use it to connect Kubernetes spending with broader cloud cost visibility.
The published plans show three distinct paths. OpenCost provides open-source Kubernetes cost monitoring with unlimited clusters and unlimited cores. Kubecost Free adds cost allocation and dashboards through an always-free tier, with 250 cores or $100K in spend over 30 days and 15 days of metric retention. Kubecost Enterprise is priced by contacting IBM and adds a unified multi-cluster view, unlimited cores, unlimited metric retention and SSO/SAML access control. Budget alerts, forecasting and commitment management are also listed category capabilities, while cloud cost data APIs support queries of provider billing information.
Rightsizing is a notable part of the product through IBM Turbonomic integration, which provides Kubernetes workload rightsizing recommendations. Integrations include AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, IBM Turbonomic, Slack, Microsoft Teams and email. That combination suits IBM-oriented organizations and teams that need flexible deployment across cloud and on-premises Kubernetes environments. Organizations wanting a free starting point can choose Kubecost Free, while larger environments may prefer Enterprise for centralized visibility and retention. Teams seeking a broader integration set or public enterprise pricing may want to compare alternatives.
