Our verdict on hw-probe
hw-probe is an open-source command-line utility for inspecting and documenting computer hardware. It captures hardware state and log snapshots, analyzes device operability, suggests drivers and kernel versions, and can upload probes to the Linux Hardware database. It is suited to Linux users who need diagnostics, hardware inventory, change monitoring, or a shareable record of a system. The project documentation also covers BSD variants, while its listed platform is Linux.
Its strongest area is the probe workflow. A probe can identify a computer, record hardware details, and provide a permanent viewing URL after upload. Offline probe saving and import support environments where immediate upload is not practical. Privacy filtering and hashed hardware identifiers add control over shared hardware information. CPU, memory, graphics, and drive sanity tests extend the utility beyond basic inventory, while ACPI table dumping and decoding provides additional firmware-level detail.
The product is distributed through native packages, AppImage, Docker, Snap, Flatpak, and Live CD/USB, giving Linux administrators and technically minded users several ways to run it. It also includes command-line operation, firmware details, installed-software information, and a portable version. The trade-off is its narrow diagnostic focus: it does not provide report export and is better suited to hardware investigation than general system reporting. Choose hw-probe when driver guidance, operability checks, offline probes, and shareable diagnostics matter; choose another system information tool when a broader report-oriented workflow or graphical interface is the priority.
