Our verdict on Hoard
Hoard is an open-source game-save backup and synchronization system for PC players who move between computers, storefronts, or emulators. Its desktop application supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, automatically detects game-save locations, creates versioned snapshots when play sessions end, and can synchronize saves across devices. Support covers Steam, Epic Games, GOG, Proton, Wine, and a broad set of emulators, including RetroArch, Dolphin, PCSX2, DuckStation, PPSSPP, RPCS3, Cemu, Ryujinx, and yuzu. Saves can be exported in the game's original format, while SHA-256 verification helps check file integrity.
The pricing structure gives Hoard a usable free starting point. Hoard Free is free forever and includes 2 GB of cloud storage, support for 3 devices, version history, automatic sync, data export, and self-hosting. Hoard Pro costs €1.99 per month and raises storage to 100 GB, removes the device limit through unlimited devices, and adds Hoard Screen while retaining version history, automatic sync, data export, and self-hosting. An annual billing option with two months free is also presented. The free tier suits a small library or a limited device setup; Pro is the clearer fit for larger collections and regular multi-device use.
Hoard's strongest differentiator is its combination of automation and control. Automatic game-save detection reduces manual location management, session-end snapshots preserve earlier states, and rollback provides a direct recovery path. Users can choose Hoard Cloud or deploy a self-hosted server using the same software, which suits people who want more control over where saves are stored. The trade-off is that scheduled backups are not supported and restore options are manual. Players seeking automatic, cross-platform save protection with store and emulator coverage should consider Hoard; those needing scheduled backups should look elsewhere.
