Our verdict on GSBS

GSBS is a self-hosted game-save synchronization service for people who use multiple desktop computers. A central server works with desktop clients that watch save locations, detect supported games, upload changes, and pull saves to other machines. Its multi-platform scope covers Windows, macOS, Linux, web, and API surfaces, with cross-operating-system path translation for systems that organize save files differently. The project is free and open source, making it suited to users who want control over their save infrastructure rather than a purely hosted service.

Its strongest area is recovery and administration. GSBS provides per-file version history, web-based file restoration, export and import of save archives, and a web dashboard with activity and administration views. Scheduled compressed backups can target local storage or S3, while optional client-side end-to-end encryption adds protection before data reaches the server. Automatic game detection uses a PCGamingWiki manifest, reducing the need to configure every supported save location manually. Offline uploads remain queued and retry automatically, which helps clients catch up after interrupted connectivity.

The trade-off is operational responsibility. Users need to run and maintain the central server, and restoration remains a manual action rather than an automatic rollback. Windows and Linux clients are covered by the installation documentation; macOS clients appear in the repository and release assets, but the installation guide does not officially support macOS. GSBS is a strong fit for technically confident users who want self-hosted synchronization, administration, and layered backup options. Those seeking a fully managed service, automatic restoration, or clearly supported macOS installation should consider an alternative.
