Our verdict on Heimdall

Heimdall is an open-source hardware monitoring system for homelabs, GPU machines, servers, and personal computers. Daemons run on monitored hosts, collect hardware and system metrics, and stream them over gRPC to a central hub. The terminal dashboard provides a live fleet view across Windows, macOS, and Linux, with metrics covering CPU, memory, disk, disk I/O, network, temperature, GPU, power, latency, uptime, and host context. API and self-hosted deployments are also supported, making Heimdall a fit for technically comfortable teams managing their own monitoring environment.

Its standout strength is the combination of fleet visibility and operational access. Heimdall supports TLS enrollment, automatic daemon reconnection, and mDNS hub discovery for host coordination. Prometheus/OpenMetrics export connects the monitoring data to Prometheus and Grafana, while Tailscale is listed among its integrations. In-dashboard host logs, a live process view, read-only allow-listed diagnostic commands, and a JSON CLI extend the product beyond passive charts. The CLI is designed for scripts, CI/CD, and agents, giving engineering teams several ways to consume the system.

Heimdall is distributed as open-source software under AGPL-3.0-or-later, with a free plan and no paid tiers described. Threshold alerting uses hysteresis and webhook delivery, so teams needing other alert channels should consider an alternative. Heimdall is the stronger pick for self-hosted operators who want terminal-first fleet monitoring, Prometheus-compatible export, and detailed hardware coverage without a paid subscription. It is less suitable for buyers seeking AI features, a wider set of alert destinations, or a less technical monitoring workflow.
