Our verdict on GraphLite

GraphLite is an open-source, embeddable graph database for applications that need graph capabilities without a client-server architecture. Its Rust core, Rust SDK, and command-line interface make it especially relevant to Rust developers exploring embedded ISO GQL. The project also describes a portable single-binary implementation and embedded Sled-based storage, so the database can live within an application rather than requiring a separate server. It is a focused option for solo developers and small or mid-market teams building around those constraints, rather than a broad graph platform for every workload.

The language and transaction features are the main draw. GraphLite implements ISO GQL, including pattern matching with MATCH clauses, and offers ACID transactions with isolation levels. Its strong type system supports validation and inference, while cost-based query optimization addresses query planning. Together, these capabilities suit projects where typed graph data and transactional behavior matter. The listed feature set is narrower in other directions: graph algorithms and vector search are not included, and there are no AI features. Teams whose work depends on those capabilities should consider another product rather than expecting them from an embedded GQL implementation.

GraphLite is listed as open source, and the repository publishes its source under the Apache License 2.0. There is no paid tier structure to weigh; the practical tradeoff is adopting and operating a self-hosted project. Linux and macOS are listed platforms, with use described through Rust crates, a CLI, or a Docker image; repository documentation includes bindings and examples for Rust, Python, and Java. Support channels are community and docs, which will suit developers comfortable with that model better than teams seeking formal support. Choose GraphLite for embedded Rust-oriented GQL work; look elsewhere for managed deployment, integrated algorithms, or vector search.
