Where it wins
- Horizontally scalable architecture with clustering and replication
- Multi-tenancy, tenant isolation, and configurable retention
- Object-store support plus recording and alerting rules
Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted deployment requires operational ownership
- PromQL is the documented query language, not SQL
- Focused on Prometheus and OpenTelemetry metrics rather than general SQL workloads
Our verdict on Grafana Mimir
Grafana Mimir is an open-source time-series database for organizations operating large-scale metrics platforms. It provides long-term storage for Prometheus and OpenTelemetry metrics, with Prometheus-compatible remote write ingestion, PromQL querying, and an HTTP API for writing, querying, and operating the cluster. Deployment is self-hosted on Linux or through its API, either as a self-managed monolith or a distributed cluster. Teams choosing Mimir should already be aligned with Prometheus-style monitoring and metrics workflows rather than seeking a general-purpose SQL database.
Its architecture is built for scale and availability. Horizontally scalable clustering supports growing workloads, while replication provides high availability. Multi-tenancy and tenant isolation separate workloads, and configurable global and per-tenant retention supports different storage policies. Long-term persistence uses object stores, including Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Microsoft Azure Storage, and OpenStack Swift. Recording rules and alerting rules extend its role beyond storage into ongoing metrics evaluation. Prometheus, OpenTelemetry Collector, Grafana Alloy, Grafana, and Influx are among the supported ecosystem connections.
The main trade-off is the operating model. Mimir is self-hosted, so the organization selecting it takes responsibility for deploying and operating the monolith or distributed cluster. Its query model is PromQL, and the documented ingestion paths center on Prometheus remote write, OpenTelemetry Protocol, and Influx HTTP. That focus makes it a strong fit for teams building or extending a Prometheus-compatible metrics platform with object-store retention and tenant isolation. It is less suitable for buyers who need SQL querying, a managed deployment, or a broader database for unrelated time-series workloads.
