  • Where it wins

    • Automatic loading with LoadingCache support
    • Flexible eviction, expiration, refresh, and invalidation controls
    • Optional statistics and synchronous or asynchronous removal listeners
  • Where it doesn't

    • Caches are local to a single application run
    • Data is held in memory and limited to available RAM
    • Not a separately hosted cache service or persistent data store

Our verdict on Google Guava Cache

Google Guava Cache is an open-source, in-process caching library included in Guava, Google's core Java libraries. It is designed for Java-based applications that need to store application objects, computed values, or database-backed values in memory. The library is distributed in separate JRE and Android flavors, with Cache and LoadingCache APIs for local application use. It fits teams seeking a free caching component embedded directly in an application rather than a separately hosted caching service.

Its feature set covers the core controls expected from an application-object cache. LoadingCache can load values automatically, while size-based and weight-based eviction help constrain memory use. Entries can expire after access or after write, and weak-key, weak-value, and soft-value references provide additional memory-management options. Applications can explicitly invalidate single entries or groups of entries, refresh loaded values, and receive synchronous or asynchronous removal notifications. Optional statistics include hit rate and eviction count, and a ConcurrentMap view provides access to cache contents through a familiar interface.

The main trade-off is scope. Guava Cache is local to one application run, stores data in memory, and does not persist data in files or external servers. That makes it appropriate for local caching where values fit in RAM and application-level control is sufficient. It is less suitable when a cache must be shared across application instances, provide edge caching, or preserve data beyond the application run. Choose it for a focused, embedded Java or Android caching layer; choose a different category of product when you need a hosted, distributed, or persistent cache service.
