Our verdict on Google Earth Engine
Google Earth Engine is a cloud platform from Google Cloud for analyzing satellite imagery and other geospatial datasets at scale. It is designed for scientists, researchers, developers, nonprofits, businesses, and government organizations working in environmental research, remote sensing, mapping, and large-scale geographic analysis. The platform combines a satellite imagery and geospatial data catalog with distributed computation, raster and vector import and export, interactive maps, chart widgets, machine learning, and shareable web applications. It is available through the web and APIs, with Python, JavaScript, and REST support.
Pricing is structured around free and paid access. Eligible nonprofit, research, and impact users can access noncommercial use at no additional cost. The Basic plan costs $500 per month and includes 100 EECU-hour monthly batch credit, 33 EECU-hour monthly online credit, and 100 GB of Earth Engine Cloud storage credit for small teams and workloads. Professional costs $2,000 per month and adds larger monthly credits—500 EECU-hour batch, 166 EECU-hour online, and 1 TB of storage—plus an SLA. Premium is intended for larger, business-critical workloads and provides customizable allocations with an SLA. Limited is a self-serve option for intermittent workloads, without usage credits or an SLA. Commercial use also combines the monthly platform fee with usage-based compute and storage charges.
Its strongest fit is work that depends on planetary-scale raster processing, satellite data, machine learning, and programmatic workflows. Google Cloud Storage, BigQuery, Google Drive, Vertex AI, and Google Cloud projects support broader cloud workflows. Interactive and batch processing modes provide flexibility, while the Code Editor and shareable applications extend the platform beyond analysis notebooks. Organizations seeking a general-purpose GIS rather than a specialized remote-sensing and large-scale computation environment may find its focus less suitable. Earth Engine is the better choice for teams whose workloads justify its scale, APIs, and cloud integrations; smaller or occasional projects should consider the free or Limited options before committing to commercial tiers.
