Our verdict on Google Distributed Cloud
Google Distributed Cloud combines managed software and hardware for organizations running workloads in data centers and distributed edge locations. It supports Kubernetes-based applications, virtual machines, persistent local storage, and AI inference on premises. The platform serves environments with regulatory, data-residency, low-latency, survivability, retail, manufacturing, and public-sector requirements. Its two deployment options are Connected, which runs on Google-certified hardware, and Air-gapped, which is designed for fully disconnected operation.
The published plans show a paid model with no free plan. Connected provides managed Kubernetes-based infrastructure and storage for containers and virtual machines, while its published pricing requires a 96-vCPU minimum per site and a five-year commitment. Air-gapped pricing is based on services consumed and capacity used. This structure fits larger deployments with defined infrastructure requirements more naturally than smaller, short-term edge projects. Buyers should assess site capacity, commitment terms, and the operational scope of the selected deployment before choosing a plan.
Google Distributed Cloud’s strongest distinction is its combination of workload coverage and isolation. Organizations can manage deployments through Google Cloud CLI and the Distributed Cloud Edge Container API, with integrations including Cloud Logging, Cloud Monitoring, Config Sync, Connect Gateway, Cloud Key Management Service, VM Runtime on GDC, AlloyDB Omni, and Cloud VPN. GPU support, Gemini and AI inference capabilities on premises, and persistent storage extend its role beyond container hosting. It is a fit for enterprises that need Google-connected or fully disconnected edge infrastructure with Kubernetes and VM support. Teams seeking a free entry tier, a lighter deployment model, or less committed site capacity should choose a narrower edge hosting option instead.
