Our verdict on Google BigQuery
Google BigQuery is a fully managed, serverless cloud data warehouse for organizations that need to store, query, and analyze large datasets. Its audience spans data engineering, business intelligence, data science, real-time analytics, and warehouse migration teams. Storage and compute scale independently, while SQL supports analytics across native tables, external tables, federated sources, and data lakes. BigQuery is available through web and API access.
Pricing combines usage-based and capacity-based models. The Free tier includes 10 GiB of storage and up to 1 TiB of on-demand queries per month. On-demand compute is billed by data scanned, with the first 1 TiB per month free. BigQuery editions—Standard, Enterprise, and Enterprise Plus—use capacity-based query processing. Logical and physical storage each include the first 10 GiB per month free, with different measurement rules. Streaming inserts, the Storage Write API, and related loading operations follow separate billing rules, and pricing can vary by region and operation. Teams should model query, storage, and ingestion patterns before choosing an approach.
Its breadth is a central strength. BigQuery supports streaming ingestion, continuous queries, data transfer, batch loading, CDC, vector search, embeddings, generative AI functions, and BigQuery ML for training, evaluating, and deploying models with SQL. Integrations include Looker, Data Studio, Tableau, Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub, Datastream, Apache Iceberg, Vertex AI Workbench, Managed Service for Apache Spark, and ODBC/JDBC applications. IAM, row and column access controls, encryption, and governance support controlled data access. BigQuery suits teams seeking one broad cloud platform; organizations needing a narrower warehouse or simpler cost model may prefer a more focused alternative.
