Our verdict on Gogs

Gogs is an open-source Git hosting service for organizations and individuals that want to run their own instance. Its scope goes beyond repository storage: teams can manage organizations, issues, pull requests, wikis, protected branches, webhooks, and repository files through a web editor. SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS access are supported, and the service runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, and ARM-based systems. It is a strong fit for self-hosters seeking a lightweight forge with a broad set of core collaboration features.

Gogs supports several paths for fitting into an existing environment. Repository migration and mirroring help with moving or synchronizing code, while webhooks connect repositories and organizations with services such as Slack, Discord, and DingTalk. Authentication options include LDAP, SMTP, PAM, and reverse-proxy authentication. Git LFS is supported with local server storage, which suits teams that want to keep large files alongside a self-managed deployment. The built-in wiki, protected branches, and web editors add useful project-management features without narrowing the product to repository hosting alone.

The main trade-offs are in advanced platform capabilities. API support is experimental, so teams planning extensive automation around the API should account for that constraint. Gogs also does not provide single sign-on support, which may matter to organizations standardizing access across multiple services. Its local-storage approach for Git LFS places storage management with the operator. Choose Gogs when self-hosting, broad repository workflows, and deployment flexibility matter most. Consider an alternative if mature API automation, single sign-on, or a more expansive enterprise platform is central to the selection.
