Our verdict on GNU Gzip

GNU Gzip is a free, open-source command-line utility for compressing and decompressing regular files. It is aimed at Linux users working with gzip streams, shell pipelines, and archive workflows built around GNU tar. Its core method is Lempel–Ziv (LZ77) compression, with gzip, gunzip, and zcat commands for handling compressed data. Standard input and output processing makes it suitable for stream-based command-line work, while recursive operation covers directory trees.

The published licensing model makes GNU Gzip available at no cost, with source releases provided under the GNU General Public License. Users can select compression levels from fast to best, run integrity tests and CRC checks for supported formats, and preserve file names, timestamps, modes, ownership, and groups where supported. Automatic detection extends decompression to gzip, single-member deflate ZIP, compress, and pack input formats. GNU tar integration is a practical fit for workflows that separate archiving from compression, rather than expecting one utility to handle both roles.

Its narrow focus is also the main boundary. GNU Gzip is a file and stream compressor, not a general archive manager; multi-file archive work is better handled with tar or zip alongside it. Its archive coverage is limited, and it has no encryption or split-archive support. Choose GNU Gzip when a lightweight Linux command-line compressor, stream processing, recursive operation, and GNU tar compatibility are the priorities. Choose another tool when encryption, broader archive management, or split archives are central requirements.
