Our verdict on GNOME Boxes
GNOME Boxes is a free, open-source desktop application for creating and managing local virtual machines on Linux. It is aimed at desktop users and developers who need VMs for testing or general use, with a beginner-friendly workflow centered on operating-system images. Boxes can allocate CPU, memory, and storage, install supported operating systems automatically, and manage virtual machines from a desktop interface. Its underlying technologies include QEMU/KVM, libvirt, and SPICE.
For day-to-day VM management, the feature set covers several practical tasks without moving beyond its desktop focus. Users can create, manage, and restore snapshots; redirect USB devices; share a clipboard and files between host and guest; configure shared folders; and use guest integration tools for display and input improvements. These capabilities make Boxes suitable for local testing and isolated desktop environments, while 3D acceleration adds support for compatible operating systems that need it.
The main trade-off is platform scope: the verified host platform is Linux, so Boxes is not a cross-platform choice for desktop virtualization. Its management interface is also designed for local desktop use rather than a broader administration environment. Choose GNOME Boxes if you want an open-source Linux application with image-based VM creation, snapshots, resource controls, and host-guest sharing. Consider another product if you need support for hosts beyond Linux or a management experience built around wider platform coverage.
