Our verdict on GitUI

GitUI is an open-source terminal user interface for Git, written in Rust. It is designed for developers who prefer keyboard-driven repository management rather than a graphical workflow. The feature set covers everyday repository work: inspecting, committing, amending, reverting, resetting, staging, unstaging, stashing, branching, pushing, fetching, browsing history, and reviewing committed diffs. GitUI also supports Git submodules and GPG commit signing, giving experienced Git users a focused interface for local repository operations.

Its strongest fit is a workflow centered on precise change selection. GitUI can stage and unstage files, hunks, and individual lines, while also offering line-, hunk-, and file-level revert and reset operations. History search and committed-diff review support code review and repository navigation from the terminal. Remote operations include push and fetch, and stash commands cover save, pop, apply, drop, and inspection. The published platform information covers Linux, macOS, Windows, and Android through Termux, with Git as its integration and a self-hosted, distributed versioning model.

GitUI is free and open source, with official release binaries and installation instructions for Linux, macOS, and Windows, plus package-manager and Termux installation paths. Its narrower scope matters: the product does not support Git LFS or sparse repositories, and the official README identifies it as beta software. Developers who want keyboard-first control over standard Git workflows should consider GitUI, particularly when granular staging and terminal-based history work are priorities. Teams that depend on large-file workflows or sparse checkout should choose a different Git client.
