Where it doesn't
- Currently in beta
- Requires a self-hosted Kubernetes deployment
- Supported-game coverage is narrower than leading products
Our verdict on Gameplane
Gameplane is a self-hosted, Kubernetes-native control panel for deploying and managing game servers across k3s, kubeadm, and managed Kubernetes clusters. It is designed for homelabs, gaming communities, hosting operators, and teams running game-server fleets. The open-source project is licensed under AGPL-3.0-or-later and covers server creation, starting, stopping, restarting, cloning, deletion, idle auto-sleep, wake-on-connect, live WebSocket consoles, browser-based file management, and administrative actions.
Its strongest area is fleet and ecosystem management. Multi-cluster controls extend the panel beyond a single deployment, while OCI game templates and module sources support repeatable provisioning. Mod installation connects with Modrinth, CurseForge, Thunderstore, Hangar, Factorio Mod Portal, Steam Workshop, SpigotMC, GitHub Releases, uMod, Nexus Mods, and other listed sources. Backups can be run on demand or on a schedule using S3-compatible storage, and relay tunnels support frp, Tailscale, or playit. Authentication and access management include Keycloak, Google OIDC, GitHub OIDC, and role-based access control.
The main tradeoff is operational scope: Gameplane is self-hosted and Kubernetes-dependent, so it suits teams already comfortable managing that infrastructure more than operators seeking a simpler standalone panel. The project is currently in beta, which matters for organizations choosing around maturity and production expectations. Its supported games include Minecraft Java, Factorio, Rust, Palworld, Valheim, Terraria, Counter-Strike 2, and others, but coverage is narrower than leading products. Choose Gameplane for open-source control, multi-cluster operations, provisioning, mods, and backups; choose an alternative if you need a broader game catalog or a less infrastructure-heavy deployment.
