Our verdict on Function Mesh

Function Mesh is an open-source framework from StreamNative for running and orchestrating Apache Pulsar Functions and Pulsar IO connectors on Kubernetes. It is aimed at teams building event-streaming or stream-processing workloads around Pulsar, including teams that want functions and connectors coordinated as connected processing meshes. Functions are supported in Java, Python, and Go, and the framework runs on Linux or macOS as a self-hosted deployment.

Its core strength is Kubernetes-native orchestration. Teams define functions, sources, sinks, and meshes using Kubernetes custom resources; a controller manages their lifecycle and creates the Kubernetes resources needed to run them. Autoscaling of event processors based on workload can help teams adapt processing capacity to incoming events. Integration with Kubernetes secrets is also supported. This makes Function Mesh a fit where Kubernetes is already part of the deployment model and Pulsar is the streaming backbone. The published product details describe an open-source offering with a free plan, rather than tiered paid plans.

Deployment has meaningful prerequisites: installation uses Helm or an installation script, and the environment requires both a Kubernetes cluster and a Pulsar cluster. Its stated integration focus is Apache Pulsar, Pulsar IO connectors, and Kubernetes, so it is not a general-purpose framework for orchestrating unrelated serverless runtimes. Teams seeking language support beyond Java, Python, and Go, or wanting a framework independent of Pulsar and Kubernetes, should consider alternatives. Function Mesh is better suited to organizations committed to that stack and comfortable operating its self-hosted infrastructure; it is less suitable when minimizing cluster dependencies is the priority.
