Our verdict on FreeRDP

FreeRDP is a free, Apache-licensed implementation of Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Protocol. It is designed for developers, system administrators, and organizations that need RDP interoperability or want to embed remote connectivity into their own software. The project includes protocol libraries, command-line clients such as xfreerdp and wfreerdp, RemoteApp support, mobile client ports, and server-side components for proxying and shadow sessions. It supports Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, APIs, and self-hosted deployments.

The published product details show a free open-source model rather than tiered commercial pricing. That keeps the software accessible for teams building their own RDP workflows, but the toolkit-oriented structure places more responsibility on the implementer. FreeRDP includes a C/C++ library for application integration, along with gateway and network authentication options. Clipboard, drive, printer, serial, parallel, audio, USB, smartcard, and WebAuthn/FIDO2 redirection provide broad control over how remote sessions interact with local systems.

FreeRDP’s main strength is breadth within the RDP protocol itself. Developers can work with clients, RemoteApp, gateways, server-side components, mobile ports, and application libraries instead of adopting a single fixed remote-access client. That makes it a strong fit for custom infrastructure, embedded connectivity, and self-hosted environments. It is less suitable for organizations seeking a ready-made managed support product with a hosted console, device-management workflow, or recording layer. Choose FreeRDP when protocol control and extensibility matter; choose a complete remote-support service when operational tooling is the priority.
