Our verdict on FileX

FileX is a self-hosted file manager and sharing application for people and teams who want to manage files on their own server. Distributed as a Go binary, it provides a web interface for local disks and several network storage options, including S3, FTP, SFTP, WebDAV and SMB/NAS. It is a fit for technical users who need to bring different storage systems together rather than move their files to a hosted storage service. The project is open source and MIT-licensed, and its listed platforms include web, Windows, macOS, Linux and self-hosted deployment.

Its breadth of storage and protocol support is the clearest distinction. FileX can mount local disks, S3, FTP, SFTP, WebDAV and SMB/NAS, then serve mounted files over S3, SFTP, FTPS, NFSv3 and WebDAV. That can suit teams that need one interface for multiple storage locations or need to expose files through more than one protocol. Sharing links can use PINs, expiry dates and download limits; trash and file version history provide additional file-management controls. End-to-end encrypted folders are also included. These capabilities make the product more than a basic file browser, but its value depends on having a reason to manage storage and protocols directly.

FileX also covers desktop folder sync and browser-based office editing, including collaborative editing through its editor app or a connected ONLYOFFICE server. Sign-in options include OIDC, LDAP/Active Directory and OS accounts, and the product offers an embeddable web component plus React and Vue components. Its self-hosted model places deployment and ongoing operation with the organization, while documentation is the listed support channel. Choose FileX if storage flexibility, self-hosting and protocol access matter more than a hosted service with a broader client footprint. Teams looking for an all-managed storage service or mobile sync should consider alternatives; FileX's described sync capability is centered on desktop applications.
