Our verdict on Filecoin
Filecoin is an open decentralized storage network and protocol for storing, retrieving, and verifying data through independent storage providers. Storage deals are recorded on the Filecoin blockchain, while cryptographic proofs show that data remains stored. It suits developers building programmable permanent storage, Web3 applications, archival backups, AI datasets, cultural archives, and scientific data. Filecoin also supports IPFS content addressing, retrieval through storage tools and providers, and smart contracts through the Filecoin Virtual Machine.
The published plans show several ecosystem entry points. Filecoin Onchain Cloud starts at $2.50 per TB per month and adds programmable cloud infrastructure, verifiable storage, retrieval and payments, Proof of Data Possession, Filecoin Pay, and a Synapse TypeScript SDK. Fil One costs $4.99 per TB per month with S3-compatible object storage, a drag-and-drop interface, client-side encryption, and access control. CIDgravity costs $5 per TB per month for a decentralized Nextcloud backend with file sync, sharing, and a REST API. Lighthouse costs $12 per 500 GB per month and offers perpetual long-term storage, a web app, a developer SDK/CLI, and a pay-once, store-forever pricing mode. Other ecosystem options include Akave Cloud, Aurora, and Ramo, each aimed at different storage workflows.
Filecoin’s strongest distinction is its combination of independent providers, on-chain deals, cryptographic proofs, IPFS, and programmable storage workflows. Node implementations including Lotus, Venus, and Forest support an open ecosystem, while Filecoin Pay extends the network’s payment and workflow capabilities. This breadth suits teams comfortable working with APIs, SDKs, developer tools, or self-hosted infrastructure. It is less suitable for buyers seeking one unified storage application with a single interface and conventional provider experience.
