  • Where it wins

    • Defines custom workloads with its Workload Model Language
    • Reports per-operation throughput, IOPS, latency, and histograms
    • Supports random, sequential, direct, and synchronous-write testing
  • Where it doesn't

    • Command-line execution requires locally compiled and installed software
    • Workload modeling requires defining filesets, processes, threads, and flowops
    • Directory platform coverage is limited to Linux

Our verdict on Filebench

Filebench is an open-source, command-line benchmark for file systems and storage devices. It is designed for engineers and performance teams that need to model application-style I/O rather than run only fixed disk tests. Its Workload Model Language lets users define filesets, processes, threads, and flowops, while predefined webserver, fileserver, and mailserver workloads provide starting points for common server patterns. Database server patterns and custom micro- and macro-benchmarks are also supported.

Filebench's pricing model is straightforward: the project is open source and available as a free benchmark. There are no paid tiers described in its published positioning. The software is compiled and installed locally, then workload files are executed from the command line. That delivery model fits teams that want control over benchmark definitions and execution environments, but it is not a hosted service with a browser-based workflow. The directory platform coverage is Linux.

The standout capability is workload depth. Users can configure filesets, processes, threads, and flowops; choose random or sequential reads and writes; and enable direct I/O or synchronous writes. Results include per-operation throughput, operations per second, and latency, with optional latency histograms. This makes Filebench a strong choice when benchmark results need to reflect specific application behavior and when latency matters alongside throughput. Choose it if you need configurable storage workload modeling at no software cost. An alternative may be more suitable if you prefer a graphical interface, hosted execution, or a simpler fixed-test workflow.
