Our verdict on FeatherCI

FeatherCI is a self-hosted continuous integration and continuous delivery system written in Go. It is designed for open-source teams migrating CI systems, especially those connecting GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, or Forgejo repositories, including self-hosted instances. Pipelines use YAML workflow files with push and pull-request triggers, dependency relationships, conditional steps, service containers, and dependency caching. The product is distributed as a single binary, Docker image, Homebrew package, or source build, with a web interface for projects, pipeline visualization, build logs, secrets, notifications, approvals, and distributed workers.

Its strongest technical fit is the combination of isolated Docker-based build execution and workflow visibility. Teams can define dependencies, inspect a visual DAG, follow real-time logs, cache dependencies and artifacts, and add manual approval steps. Encrypted secrets with masked logs address a common CI requirement, while distributed worker nodes support execution across more than one worker. Pull-request and push triggers, along with integrations for GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, and Forgejo, make it suitable for repository-driven development. Notifications can reach SMTP services, Slack, Discord, or Pushover.

The trade-off is operational ownership. FeatherCI is self-hosted, so teams are responsible for deploying and maintaining the CI service, its Docker execution environment, repository connections, secrets, and worker nodes. That model can suit organizations that want open-source software and control over where builds run, but it is less appropriate for teams seeking a managed hosted CI service. Migration support for GitHub Actions and CircleCI configurations can reduce the move to FeatherCI, while the single-binary distribution provides several installation paths. Choose FeatherCI when self-hosting and Docker-based isolation fit your operating model; choose another product if managed execution is the priority.
