Our verdict on Fari
Fari is a free, open-source virtual tabletop for tabletop role-playing games, aimed at game masters and groups running rules-light, narrative-focused sessions. It supports browser-based online play through temporary shareable join links, while offline sessions use local browser storage. Players can see synchronized scene and character changes during online sessions, and the platform includes campaign tools, a rules compendium, customizable character sheets, dice mechanics, and scene management.
Its strongest area is flexible session structure. Game masters can create character sheets with pages, sections, and reusable blocks, then use skills, dice pools, point counters, and slot trackers to support different game systems. Scene boards combine public and private index cards, allowing information to remain hidden from players until needed. Pre-made and reusable card templates, initiative tracking, card pinning, character-sheet printing, and PDF export add practical tools for preparation and play without tying sessions to one ruleset.
Fari’s main trade-off is its product transition. The original Fari App entered maintenance mode in February 2024, while the current website presents a newer v0.1.0 version with desktop installation marked as coming soon. Current alpha desktop builds are associated with macOS and Windows, alongside browser access. Groups wanting a free workspace for narrative campaigns, flexible sheets, and card-based scenes should find the feature set well aligned. Teams seeking a mature, actively expanding platform with a wider ecosystem should consider alternatives.
