Our verdict on Drive Snapshot

Drive Snapshot is paid disk imaging and recovery software from Tom Ehlert Software, founded in 2000. It is designed for Windows users who need to create images of disks or partitions while Windows is running, then restore partitions when required. The product supports full and differential image creation, virtual-drive mounting, partition and disk restoration, and operation from a portable executable without requiring installation. Its core audience is Windows administrators and individuals who want a focused imaging utility rather than a broader backup suite.

Its strongest area is the combination of imaging, inspection, encryption, and recovery options. Differential images can build on a full image, while virtual mounting allows image contents to be accessed as virtual drives. AES-256 image encryption addresses protection for stored images. Recovery can be performed through DOS, Windows PE, or Windows installation media, and command-line operation gives the product a path for scripted workflows. Bootable recovery media is part of its feature set, making the recovery environment an important part of the product’s design.

Drive Snapshot also has broader filesystem coverage than its Windows-only platform label suggests. It supports FAT, NTFS, ReFS, EXT2/3/4, ReiserFS, and XFS, which can help when image contents involve selected Linux filesystems. The trade-off is a narrow product focus: it is not suited to buyers seeking native operation across multiple desktop platforms or an integration-led backup ecosystem. Choose it for direct Windows disk imaging, differential backups, encrypted images, and several recovery paths; consider an alternative if cross-platform operation or broader platform integration is central to the requirement.
