Our verdict on dperf
dperf is a free, open-source command-line drive benchmarking utility from MinIO for system administrators and DevOps teams working with Linux storage. It measures read and write throughput across one or more drives, with support for parallel or serial execution. Users can configure block size, file size, and concurrent I/O operations per drive, making it suited to comparing drives, identifying throughput outliers, and validating storage behavior across multiple devices. It runs as a Linux binary and supports several Linux architectures.
Its strongest fit is parallel storage validation. dperf uses direct I/O through O_DIRECT to bypass operating-system caches, then reports sorted per-drive performance results. Automatic cleanup of temporary test files keeps the benchmark workflow focused on measurement rather than manual file management. Kubernetes Job and DaemonSet deployment examples also extend the utility to containerized storage checks and repeatable infrastructure workflows. These capabilities make it practical for teams that need throughput results at the drive level rather than a broad storage-analysis suite.
The trade-off is a narrow measurement scope. dperf covers sequential read and write throughput, but it does not provide random I/O tests, IOPS measurement, or latency measurement. It is also limited to Linux and is operated through a command-line interface, so teams seeking a graphical cross-platform benchmark or detailed random-workload analysis should choose a different tool. Pick dperf when parallel multi-drive Linux throughput testing, direct I/O, cleanup, and Kubernetes deployment patterns are the priority; look elsewhere when latency, IOPS, or random access behavior is central.
