Our verdict on Disguise Designer

Disguise Designer is Windows software for designing, visualising, sequencing and running real-time visual experiences. It is aimed at production teams working across large 3D stages, projection and LED environments, live video, show control and Disguise media-server workflows. Its feature set spans real-time stage visualisation, timeline sequencing with layers and keyframes, projector simulation, automatic soft-edge blending, live inputs and external control. Projects can be prepared on a laptop or desktop and transferred to Disguise media servers for production use.

The pricing structure separates learning and production work. Designer Starter is free and includes core Designer functionality, the plugin framework, and learning, training and testing workflows; it requires Disguise Cloud authentication. Designer Pro adds full production-ready functionality, live show programming, real-time editing and multi-user collaboration. The published plans show Pro at $159 per month when billed monthly or $1,500 per year when billed annually. The optional Ask AId3n AI-powered plugin is included among Pro’s highlights. This makes Starter a practical entry point for familiarisation, while paid access is the relevant tier for live projects and collaborative production.

Designer’s strongest fit is a hybrid workflow connecting visual design with live control and media-server operation. It supports SDI, DirectShow and NDI inputs, RenderStream, MIDI, OSC, DMX/Art-Net and timecode, alongside integrations with Unreal Engine, Unity and Notch. Multi-user editing can work with Disguise servers or Pro instances. Choose it when a project needs detailed 3D preparation, projection or LED simulation, advanced control protocols and collaboration. A simpler projection task may not need this breadth, and teams requiring a platform other than Windows should choose an alternative.
