Our verdict on DigitalOcean VPC
DigitalOcean VPC provides isolated private networks for Droplets, Kubernetes clusters, databases, and other supported DigitalOcean resources. Teams choose a private IP range, attach resources, and enable communication within the VPC without sending that traffic over the public internet. It is a fit for small teams through enterprises running workloads on DigitalOcean, especially when they want private networking without a separate VPC charge. Organizations that need a multi-cloud network or prefer a provider-managed connection to external networks should consider a different approach.
Networking scope is the key trade-off. DigitalOcean documents VPC networking as a regional feature, and VPC peering connects VPCs between DigitalOcean regions. The service is designed for workloads running entirely on DigitalOcean; connectivity to external networks can be built with customer-managed VPN appliances. That keeps the core offering focused on private communication among DigitalOcean resources, rather than making it a broad hybrid-cloud networking layer.
