Our verdict on DiceDB

DiceDB is an open-source, self-hosted in-memory data structure server and data store built as a fork of Valkey. It targets caching, message queues, and applications that need reactive updates from changing query results. Redis- and Valkey-compatible commands, clients, SDKs, tooling, and workflows make it a focused option for teams already working with those ecosystems. Docker deployment is supported on Linux and macOS environments.

Its standout capability is query subscriptions through OBSERVE, which provides real-time push updates for subscribed queries. That makes DiceDB relevant to applications where clients need changes delivered as data updates occur instead of relying only on repeated reads. The storage model also extends beyond a purely memory-bound cache: evicted keys can spill to RocksDB, then be restored transparently after a cache miss. TTL preservation continues across eviction and restoration, helping time-limited data retain its intended expiration behavior.

DiceDB supports strings, hashes, lists, sets, sorted sets, and HyperLogLog, covering common Redis-style data structures. It is free and open source, with self-hosted deployment rather than a hosted service or paid plan structure. The main boundary is persistence: spilled storage starts fresh on every load, so it does not provide durable state across restarts. Choose DiceDB when Redis or Valkey compatibility, query subscriptions, and tiered cache storage are central requirements. Choose another option for workloads that need restart-persistent data or a managed deployment model.
