Our verdict on Apache Ignite

Apache Ignite is an open-source, memory-first distributed SQL database for mission-critical, high-velocity applications. It combines key-value and table APIs with SQL access, ACID transactions across partitions, schema-driven data placement, clustering, replication, and distributed compute. Teams can deploy it on bare metal, virtual machines, Docker, Kubernetes, or cloud environments, while applications can connect through native clients, the Ignite thin-client protocol, JDBC, ODBC, REST, or supported language clients for Java, .NET, C++, and Python. It is a fit for organizations that need more than a narrow key-value store and want an open-source distributed data platform.

Its broad API and storage model are the main differentiators. Applications can use optional persistent and in-memory storage engines, partition-aware client routing, schema evolution without downtime, and distributed replication with Raft consensus. The platform also supports OpenTelemetry metrics, authentication, SSL/TLS, Spring Data, and both clustering and multi-region deployment. This makes Ignite suitable for systems where data placement, transactions, operational visibility, and multiple access patterns matter alongside key-value performance. Teams focused only on straightforward key-value reads and writes may find its wider SQL, compute, and replication scope unnecessary.

Apache Ignite has two maintained generations: Ignite 3 and Ignite 2 LTS. That gives teams a defined version path, but selecting between the database-first Ignite 3 architecture and the Ignite 2 LTS line adds planning work. TTL support is documented for Ignite 2 cache expiry. With no commercial plan structure to evaluate, the key buying decision is architectural fit rather than tier comparison. Choose Ignite for open-source, self-hosted distributed SQL and key-value workloads that need persistence choices, transactions, replication, and compute. Choose a narrower key-value product when simplicity and a focused data model matter more than breadth.
