Our verdict on Decanter
Decanter is an open-source macOS application and command-line tool for running Windows games on Apple Silicon Macs. It is designed for players who want each game managed in its own Windows environment rather than sharing one general-purpose setup. Decanter selects Wine and graphics-translation configurations per game, supports D3DMetal, DXVK, and WineD3D modes, and requires macOS 14 or later, Apple Silicon, and Rosetta 2.
Its standout feature is isolation. Decanter creates a separate APFS-cloned Windows environment for each game, restricts game filesystem access, and stores protected saves and snapshots externally. That structure can make compatibility work more controlled and repeatable, while launch testing and diagnostic reports provide a way to examine how a game is configured. The application also offers compatibility reasoning, BepInEx mod detection and setup, and options to export game setup files or a standalone Mac app.
Decanter fits users who value per-game control, mod support, diagnostics, and portable setup artifacts. It is also GPL-3.0 software and open source. The tradeoff is a focused platform scope: macOS is supported, while Linux is not, and the requirements exclude Intel Macs. Decanter does not provide the Wine and graphics runtime files itself, so users must supply those files before running games. Choose it when isolated environments and configuration visibility matter more than broad operating-system coverage or a simplified all-in-one runtime workflow.
