Our verdict on Databasement

Databasement is a self-hosted web application for managing recurring database backups and restorations. It connects to MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB, SQLite, Firebird, Redis and Valkey, with deployment options for Docker, Docker Compose, Kubernetes with Helm and native Ubuntu. It is aimed at teams that want open-source backup automation under their own control, particularly where private networks, varied storage targets or multiple database engines are part of the environment.

Backup operations cover scheduled recurring jobs, point-in-time snapshots, cross-server restoration and retention policies based on days or GFS strategies. Storage can be local or use Amazon S3-compatible services, Azure Blob Storage, Samba/SMB, SFTP or FTP. SSH tunnels and remote agents address databases located in private, firewalled or isolated networks. Compression and AES-256 encryption options add controls for backup handling, while email, chat and webhook notifications can report failures. Slack, Discord, Telegram, Pushover and Gotify are among the notification integrations, and REST API and MCP server support provide automation paths.

Access management includes roles, organizations and optional two-factor authentication, with Google, GitHub and GitLab OAuth integrations. Databasement’s broad database and storage coverage makes it a fit for infrastructure teams seeking a configurable self-hosted system rather than a managed backup service. The main boundary is operational: deployment, maintenance and restore readiness remain with the team running it. Restore verification is not supported, and Redis and Valkey backups cannot currently be restored. Choose Databasement when open-source control and flexible network or storage connections matter most; choose another option when verified restores or supported restoration for those engines are essential.
