Our verdict on D&D Beyond Maps
D&D Beyond Maps is a browser-based virtual tabletop for Dungeons & Dragons, designed for Dungeon Masters and players who already keep characters, campaigns, and digital books in D&D Beyond. It connects to D&D Beyond character sheets, campaigns, and library, while sessions support maps, encounter creation, initiative tracking, shared dice rolls, and campaign notes. Web, iOS, and Android availability gives groups options for accessing the service across devices. Its strongest fit is therefore a D&D Beyond-centered group that wants maps alongside its existing campaign materials, rather than a group seeking a tabletop oriented around a broader ecosystem.
The free plan includes up to 6 character slots, campaign invitations, homebrew creation and use, game hosting, and the official and partnered book library. Hero Tier costs $2.99 per month with monthly billing or $2.17 per month billed annually; it adds unlimited character slots, 250+ Maps VTT components, weekly drop-in encounters, community Homebrew access, and one-week early access to pre-ordered books. Master Tier costs $5.99 monthly or $4.58 per month billed annually, adding purchased-content sharing, homebrew monster tokens in Maps, custom map uploads, up to 10 GB of custom-map storage, and two-week early access to pre-ordered books. The published plans make basic hosting accessible without a subscription, while custom-map tools are part of the higher tier.
For play at the table, Maps combines fog of war, overlays, drawing, pings, distance measurement, quickplay maps with preloaded monsters, and a shared Game Log. Official and third-party maps and monster tokens draw on the D&D Beyond library; custom uploads and homebrew tokens offer additional ways to shape encounters. The trade-off is ecosystem scope: the listed integrations are D&D Beyond sheets, campaigns, and library, so groups built around other tools may find the fit less compelling. Maps is labeled Beta on the product page. Choose it if D&D Beyond integration and included campaign tools matter most; consider another virtual tabletop if independence from that ecosystem is a priority.
