  • Where it wins

    • YAML configuration supports repeatable, idempotent cluster workflows.
    • Works with Docker Desktop, Kind, k3d, Minikube, and kubectl.
    • Creates registries and manages cluster state from the command line.
  • Where it doesn't

    • No graphical interface is included.
    • Relies on supported cluster backends rather than its own runtime.
    • Kubernetes version selection is documented for Minikube.

Our verdict on ctlptl

ctlptl is an open-source command-line tool for developers and infrastructure engineers who need repeatable local Kubernetes environments. It uses YAML to define clusters and registries, while commands support inspection, creation, configuration, and deletion. Supported environments include Windows, macOS, and Linux. ctlptl can create clusters, set the current kubectl context, list running clusters, apply configuration files idempotently, and delete clusters and their state. It is suited to local development and CI workflows where consistent cluster lifecycle commands matter more than a graphical interface.

Its strongest fit is a declarative workflow built around existing Kubernetes backends. ctlptl works with Docker Desktop, Kind, k3d, Minikube, and kubectl, and can manage Docker Desktop Kubernetes settings. It also supports creating and connecting local container registries, allocating CPUs for supported local environments, and creating clusters on a remote Docker host. Per-cluster Kubernetes version selection is available through --kubernetes-version or kubernetesVersion, with the documented selection support focused on Minikube. These capabilities make the tool useful when a team wants configuration files and repeatable commands rather than manual environment setup.

The trade-off is its deliberately narrow CLI focus. There is no included GUI, and ctlptl depends on supported cluster backends instead of providing a standalone Kubernetes runtime. That makes it a practical control layer for users who already work with Docker Desktop, Kind, k3d, or Minikube, but less suitable for anyone seeking an all-in-one local Kubernetes application. Choose ctlptl for YAML-based lifecycle management, registry handling, and repeatable command-line operations; choose an alternative if visual administration or an independent cluster runtime is the priority.
