Our verdict on Cosmic IDE

Cosmic IDE is an open-source development environment that runs on Android phones, tablets, and compatible arm64 devices. It is designed for developers who want to write, build, and manage software directly from an Android device. The environment supports Java, Kotlin, Scala, Rust, C/C++, Go, Gleam, Python, Lua, HTML, and Markdown, making it a strong fit for solo developers and small teams working across JVM, native, scripting, and web projects. Its current development build targets Android 8 or newer.

The editor combines multiple tabs, syntax themes, a minimap, find and replace, custom fonts, and language-server support. Completion, diagnostics, hover information, navigation, and signature help are available through language tooling. Project workflows extend beyond Gradle through Cargo, CMake, Maven, npm, and custom configurations. Git support covers cloning, staging, commits, branches, push, pull, and history review. An interactive Bash terminal runs in an app-private Linux/glibc environment, while installable plugins add language, formatter, project, and build support. Foojay integration provides JDK download and switching.

Cosmic IDE is free and open source, but its focus is code development rather than a complete visual mobile application workflow. It does not provide a visual designer, emulator or simulator functionality, or verified installable app-artifact packaging. Developers who want direct Android coding, terminal access, Gradle builds, Git, and language-server tooling should find its scope well aligned. Teams that need visual interface design, device simulation, or a confirmed path to packaged mobile artifacts should choose a different tool or pair Cosmic IDE with additional software.
