Our verdict on Compiler Explorer
Compiler Explorer is an open-source, browser-based programming environment for examining how source code is compiled. It is designed for software developers, educators, students, and compiler researchers who need to compare compiler behavior, study generated assembly, or explain the relationship between source code and lower-level output. The hosted web application supports more than 30 programming languages, while self-hosted instances provide another deployment option. A free plan is available through its open-source model.
Its main strength is the depth of compiler inspection in a single workspace. Users can choose among multiple compilers for supported languages, adjust optimization levels and compiler arguments, view compiler diagnostics, and execute compiled programs with command-line arguments and standard input. Beyond assembly, Compiler Explorer can show ASTs, LLVM IR, optimization remarks, and control-flow graphs, and can run additional binary and compiler tools on compilation results. Permanent short links preserve editor and compiler configurations, which suits teaching, code review, documentation, and repeatable examples. CPP Insights and Quick-Bench extend the surrounding workflow.
The platform also supports a REST API for compilation, compiler listings, tools, libraries, and formatting. Claude Explain adds AI-generated explanations of code and assembly output, while the project’s open-source status allows local deployment. Execution is backend-scoped, so the product is oriented around a browser-and-backend workflow rather than local browser execution. Choose Compiler Explorer when compiler behavior, assembly, intermediate representations, or optimization are central to the work. A general-purpose coding environment may be a better fit when the priority is broader application development rather than examining compilation results.
