Our verdict on CommView

CommView is a Windows-based packet sniffer, network monitor, and protocol analyzer for LAN administrators, security professionals, network programmers, and home users. It captures and decodes traffic from wired and virtual network interfaces, then presents IP connections, protocol statistics, traffic charts, reconstructed TCP sessions, and UDP streams. Packet filtering can use protocol, address, port, text, and direction rules, while capture logs and reports support later review.

Its feature breadth is the main reason to consider it. CommView supports importing and exporting Wireshark, Tcpdump, and pcapng capture files, captures decrypted SSL traffic through virtual adapters, and includes packet generation with visual packet-building tools. CommView Remote Agent adds remote monitoring from other computers, and the product supports Windows desktop and Windows Server environments. These capabilities make it suitable for administrators and security professionals who need more than live packet inspection alone.

Plan selection matters for VoIP work. The CommView 1 Year Time-Limited License and CommView plans do not include the VoIP module, while CommView VoIP is described as the full featured version. The Remote Agent is separately priced, adding another consideration for distributed monitoring. CommView fits buyers who need a Windows-focused analyzer with capture, decoding, file compatibility, remote monitoring, and packet-generation features. Buyers seeking a free plan, a non-Windows platform, or VoIP support in the standard plans should look elsewhere.
