Codeberg is a community-driven, non-profit Git hosting and software collaboration platform operated by Codeberg e.V. It is based on Forgejo and is primarily intended for developers and maintainers of free and open-source projects. Teams can create public or private repositories, access them over SSH or HTTP, track issues, collaborate through pull requests and forks, maintain repository wikis, and organize work through teams and repository permissions. The web and API platforms support a broad set of core repository workflows, while Codeberg Pages can publish static websites.

The main value is breadth within a free service. Repositories can include releases with attached files and release notes, Git LFS storage with file locking, and hosted Woodpecker CI access. Limited hosted Forgejo Actions are also available. Integrations with Forgejo, Woodpecker CI, Weblate and Codeberg Pages give open-source projects a connected toolset, particularly when their workflows fit that ecosystem. This makes Codeberg a strong choice for teams prioritizing open-source alignment, repository collaboration and predictable access without a paid plan.

The trade-off is that hosted automation is not an unrestricted resource. Hosted Woodpecker CI requires manual approval and is provided with limitations, while storage and CI limits are reviewed according to project needs. The documentation cites 1.5 GiB for combined packages, LFS and attachments before requesting additional resources. Codeberg is therefore a good fit for open-source maintainers who value a non-profit platform and can work within approval and resource constraints. Teams needing a wider integration ecosystem, more conventional tiered capacity or fewer hosted CI restrictions should consider another Git hosting service.

Codeberg pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Public and private repositories with issues, pull requests and wikis
    • Releases, Git LFS, file locking, Pages and organization permissions
    • Free hosting with Forgejo, Woodpecker CI and Weblate integrations
  • Where it doesn't
    • Hosted CI requires manual approval and has resource limitations
    • Combined packages, LFS and attachments cite a 1.5 GiB threshold
    • Its integration ecosystem is narrower than broader Git hosting services
