Cloud Native Buildpacks Lifecycle is the reference implementation of the Cloud Native Buildpacks specification. It is designed for platform operators and buildpack ecosystems that need to coordinate application builds from source into OCI container images. The lifecycle covers detection, cache restoration, build, export, launch, rebase, and related phases, and is distributed as open-source binaries or an OCI lifecycle image. It fits teams building or integrating their own container build workflows rather than teams looking for a hosted build service.

Its strongest technical value is the breadth of the build lifecycle it coordinates. Phase-specific binaries include the analyzer, detector, restorer, builder, exporter, creator, launcher, and rebaser. Builds can create OCI application images and cache layers through either local cache directories or registry-backed cache images. Buildpack-provided and lifecycle SBOM files are carried through builds, while non-root execution supports unprivileged container environments. ARM64 and AMD64 application image builds are supported when the host architecture matches.
