Our verdict on Cargo

Cargo is the package manager and build tool for Rust. It suits developers and teams building Rust libraries, command-line tools, services, and other applications, from single packages to multi-package workspaces. Cargo downloads and compiles dependencies, resolves versions, runs tests and documentation tasks, creates distributable .crate packages, and publishes packages to crates.io or alternative registries. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and is open-source software rather than a hosted subscription product.

Dependency management is Cargo’s central strength. Dependencies can come from crates.io, alternative registries, Git repositories, or local paths, while Cargo.lock records resolved versions for reproducible builds. Workspace support provides shared metadata and lockfiles across multiple packages. Private registry authentication is supported through credential providers and tokens, and offline or frozen operation can use locally cached crates. These capabilities make Cargo suitable for teams that need repeatable dependency handling across larger Rust codebases, not only for small projects.

Cargo also covers the publishing and build lifecycle within the Rust ecosystem. It can create compressed .crate packages, publish them to supported registries, and build library, binary, example, test, and benchmark targets. That breadth makes it a strong fit for Rust-native package development and distribution. It is less suitable for teams seeking a general-purpose package manager spanning unrelated programming languages or package formats. Choose Cargo when Rust is the primary development environment and registry, workspace, lockfile, or offline workflows matter; look elsewhere when the requirement is a language-agnostic package system.
