Our verdict on CapRover
CapRover is a free, open-source, self-hosted platform for deploying and managing containerized applications on infrastructure you control. It is aimed at small teams that want a PaaS-style workflow without handing hosting to a service provider. Deployments can be managed through a web dashboard or CLI, with Git and webhook workflows also supported. Teams configure domains, environment variables, ports, persistent directories, and instance counts as part of their application setup.
Its strongest fit is the Docker ecosystem. CapRover works with Docker and Docker Swarm, supports selected Docker Compose deployments, and uses nginx and Let's Encrypt for routing and automatic HTTPS certificates. One-click templates provide deployments for applications, databases, and other services. For teams running multiple nodes, Docker Swarm clustering and load balancing across application instances offer a path beyond a single server. This scope suits operators comfortable managing container infrastructure; teams seeking a hosted platform that abstracts away server operations should look elsewhere.
CapRover itself is free and self-hosted, but that does not make the full deployment cost-free: hosting, servers, domains, and related infrastructure are separate expenses. The platform does not include autoscaling or managed databases, so teams must plan for scaling and database operation themselves. Choose CapRover when control over infrastructure and Docker-based deployment workflows are priorities, especially for a small team able to own those operational tasks. Consider another option if you need provider-managed database services, automatic capacity scaling, or a platform that takes responsibility for the underlying infrastructure.
