Our verdict on Canonical Managed MySQL
Canonical Managed MySQL is a paid managed database service for organizations that want Canonical to deploy and operate MySQL clusters. It targets Linux teams running MySQL on customer cloud tenancy or private data-center infrastructure. The service covers cluster deployment, patching, upgrades, security updates, monitoring, hardening, optimization and day-two operations. It also supports high-availability cluster operation, SLA-backed uptime commitments, backup and restore with point-in-time recovery, TLS encryption and optional operational handover to customer teams.
The published plans are priced annually as management fees. Managed MySQL on virtual machines costs $3,099 per VM per year, while Managed MySQL on bare metal nodes costs $9,470 per bare metal node per year. Infrastructure cost is separate from both plans, and pricing is based on the VM or bare-metal node rather than the database. The service can run across AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, MAAS, MicroCloud, OpenStack, VMware and Kubernetes, giving teams several deployment paths for cloud and private infrastructure.
Canonical Managed MySQL is a strong fit for organizations that want managed operations around self-hosted MySQL, including monitoring, security updates, high availability, backups and point-in-time recovery. Cluster-to-cluster replication and manual replica scaling support operational expansion, while service health dashboards provide visibility into the environment. The main tradeoffs are the annual management fees, separate infrastructure costs and manual scaling model. Teams seeking per-database pricing, automatic replica scaling or a free plan should consider a different service. Teams comfortable with Linux infrastructure and node-based pricing should find the feature set aligned with operational ownership and control.
