Our verdict on Bugzilla

Bugzilla is a web-based, open-source defect and issue tracking system for software development teams. It supports recording, searching, prioritizing, assigning, discussing, and reporting on bugs, enhancements, and other change requests. Teams managing complex or high-volume software projects can use custom fields, configurable workflows, permissions, notifications, time tracking, deadlines, and approvals attached to bugs. Founded in 1998, Bugzilla is aimed at organizations that want mature issue management under their own control rather than a vendor-hosted service.

Its strongest area is the depth of its bug-tracking workflow. Advanced search supports full-text and time-based queries, while reports, charts, and scheduled email reports help teams monitor work. Bug lists can be exported in Atom, iCalendar, CSV, XML, and other formats. Time estimation, time tracking, deadlines, requests, approvals, and user-controlled email notifications extend the system beyond basic defect logging. Extensions and custom fields provide room for installation-specific processes, making Bugzilla a fit for teams whose workflows do not map neatly to a fixed template.

Bugzilla is free and open source, with self-hosted deployment on an organization’s own server. It supports web access across Windows, macOS, and Linux environments, along with a REST web-services API and LDAP authentication. That setup suits organizations able to manage infrastructure, permissions, customization, and ongoing administration. Teams that want a vendor-hosted SaaS product, minimal operational ownership, or a clearly defined external integration ecosystem should consider another issue tracker. Bugzilla is the stronger choice for self-hosted teams that value control, configurable workflows, and established defect-management capabilities.
