Our verdict on Bubblewrap

Bubblewrap is an open-source Linux command-line utility for constructing sandbox environments around processes. It creates unprivileged sandboxes with Linux namespaces and mount operations, without requiring privileged users. Developers can use it to control filesystem visibility, process and user isolation, networking, environment variables, hostnames, and system calls. It is aimed at Linux developers and higher-level tools that need a low-level building block rather than a complete sandbox policy or hosted service.

Its main strength is the breadth of controls available through command-line options. Bubblewrap can create a new mount namespace with an initially empty tmpfs root, then define access through bind, read-only bind, overlay, tmpfs, and directory mounts. It can configure user, IPC, PID, network, UTS, and cgroup namespaces, retain the host network namespace or isolate networking, and set custom sandbox UID, GID, and hostname values. Environment variables can be set, unset, or cleared, while seccomp filters can restrict system calls. These controls suit developers who need to define narrowly scoped local process environments.

Bubblewrap also fits projects that need an underlying sandbox component: it is used by Flatpak and integrates with rpm-ostree and bwrap-oci. The published design is self-hosted and local, with command-line access rather than a hosted management layer. Its default sandbox root is temporary and cleaned up when the last process exits, although bind and overlay options can use host storage for persistence. Choose Bubblewrap when Linux namespace and filesystem controls are the priority and you are comfortable defining policy. Choose another option if you need cross-platform support, a hosted service, or a complete policy layer.
