Where it wins
- Firecracker microVM isolation with a dedicated kernel per sandbox
- Configurable outbound networking, persistent state, and session controls
- SDK, REST API, CLI, Dockerfile templates, and BYOC deployment
Where it doesn't
- Pro usage is billed by the second beyond the monthly plan
- Hobby sessions are limited to 1 hour and 20 concurrent sandboxes
- Advanced observability and signed webhooks are enterprise features
Our verdict on E2B
E2B provides isolated cloud sandboxes for AI agents, coding tools, data analysis, browser automation, and other workloads that run untrusted code. Each session uses a Firecracker microVM with its own kernel, filesystem, and memory boundary. Developers can execute commands and code, manage files, control outbound internet access, pause and resume sessions, and connect to existing sessions through SDKs, REST APIs, and a command-line tool. It supports web, Linux, API, and self-hosted deployments, with integrations for MCP servers, OpenAI, and Anthropic.
The published plans provide a clear progression. Hobby has no plan fee, includes a one-time usage credit, supports sessions up to 1 hour, allows 20 concurrent sandboxes, and does not require a credit card. Pro costs $150 per month, bills usage by the second, supports sessions up to 24 hours, includes 100 concurrent sandboxes expandable to 1,100, and adds custom sandbox CPU and RAM. Enterprise uses committed usage and custom billing, with multi-day and persistent sessions, tens of thousands of concurrent sandboxes, and BYOC deployment. E2B Embed supports infrastructure-controlled deployment, while BYOC is managed in the customer's cloud.
E2B's strongest fit is for teams that need more than basic process isolation: configurable networking, persistent storage, custom Dockerfile-based templates, and lifecycle controls suit AI applications that execute variable or untrusted workloads. Enterprise deployments add metrics, logs, and signed lifecycle webhooks. The trade-off is pricing complexity from separate plan fees and per-second sandbox usage, while Hobby has short sessions and limited concurrency. Choose E2B when isolation, programmable control, and deployment flexibility matter; choose an alternative when a simpler, fixed-cost sandbox is the priority.
