Our verdict on BitKeeper
BitKeeper is a distributed source-code management system for software teams working across small projects and very large codebases. It provides command-line and graphical tools for cloning, committing, pulling, pushing, merging, annotating, and managing repository collections. Teams on Linux, Windows, or macOS can use it as open-source software under the Apache 2.0 License, with a self-hosted deployment model. Its strongest fit is a distributed team that needs repository locking, structured product collections, and control over source-management infrastructure.
The product’s standout capabilities address projects that extend beyond a single source repository. BK/Nested organizes related repositories into synchronized products, which can help teams manage collections of components together. Binary Asset Management handles large binary files through a separate server, while file and repository locking supports workflows where concurrent edits to certain assets need coordination. These features make BitKeeper more suitable for mixed source and binary projects than a narrowly focused source-only workflow. Teams that mainly need a simple centralized repository may find this breadth unnecessary.
BitKeeper also combines familiar clone, pull, push, commit, and merge operations with sparse cloning of selected components, revision annotations, and history exploration. Checksum validation and redundant data encoding add repository-integrity mechanisms, while graphical and command-line tools give teams different working styles. The tradeoff is operational ownership: self-hosting means the team is responsible for its deployment environment, and large binary assets use a separate server. Choose BitKeeper when distributed workflows, locking, nested repositories, or binary asset management are central requirements; choose another tool when a lightweight, hosted-only workflow is the priority.
