Our verdict on BigCam
BigCam is a free, open-source Linux desktop application for turning webcams, DSLR and mirrorless cameras, CSI cameras, IP cameras, PipeWire sources, and smartphones into video sources. It is aimed at Linux users who want detailed control over camera hardware, live preview, effects, recording, and virtual camera output for tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, OBS Studio, and Discord.
Its strongest area is hardware breadth and camera control. BigCam supports V4L2, gPhoto2, libcamera, PipeWire, IP, and smartphone sources, while per-camera settings cover exposure, focus, zoom, pan, tilt, white balance, and image adjustments. Real-time OpenCV effects, photo capture, multi-codec video recording, QR and barcode scanning, and v4l2loopback virtual-camera output extend it beyond a basic webcam utility. Smartphone connections can use a browser, scrcpy over USB or Wi-Fi, or AirPlay. Phone sources also include audio capture, volume, and mute controls.
The trade-off is a focused feature set rather than a scene-building workspace. BigCam does not provide scene composition or background effects, and its documented virtual-camera output is a video device rather than a general audio-routing system. Its platform support is Linux, so users on other operating systems should choose another tool. Pick BigCam when hardware access, camera controls, smartphone inputs, and Linux virtual-camera output matter most; choose an alternative when compositing scenes, replacing backgrounds, or routing audio are central requirements.
