Our verdict on Battlegrounds: RPG Edition

Battlegrounds: RPG Edition is a system-agnostic virtual tabletop for game masters and players who bring their own RPG rules, maps, miniatures, and reference materials. It supports online, LAN, and offline play on Windows and macOS. Game masters host sessions through the GM Client, while players join with Player Clients. The feature set centers on desktop tactical play: digital battlemaps with square or hexagonal grids, tokens, range measurement, dynamic fog of war, dice rolling, turn sequencing, text chat, card decks, drawing tools, visual aids, and audio clip playback.

Pricing uses one-time licenses rather than a recurring subscription. The Demo provides a full-featured GM Client for evaluation, with a 45-minute session timeout unless connected to a GM Client with a Floating License. The Player Client costs $14 one-time and supports joining online or LAN-based games, chat, dice, and reference materials. The GM Client costs $28 one-time and provides hosting plus every feature in the program. A Floating License costs $14 one-time each, while a five-pack costs $60 one-time and lets five people participate through the Demo. Players can upgrade to the GM Client for $16 one-time.

Battlegrounds suits groups that want a focused desktop tabletop with tactical map tools, card support, configurable turns, and system-neutral play. It also gives game masters control over visual aids and audio clips, while built-in private and group text chat can export chat logs. The trade-off is a narrower, older product direction: the vendor says it remains supported but is no longer developed or updated, and its published system requirements include Windows 10 and Mac OS X 10.6-era requirements. Voice chat is external, and the product has no video, mobile apps, or rules compendium. Groups seeking those capabilities should choose another tabletop tool; groups prioritizing maps, cards, and custom rules on desktop may find the licensing structure a practical fit.
