Our verdict on Azure Event Hubs
Azure Event Hubs is a fully managed cloud service for collecting and streaming event data from applications, websites, devices, and telemetry systems. It is suited to Azure teams that need partitioned event streams, high-throughput ingestion, Kafka protocol compatibility, and connections to Azure storage, analytics, and application services. Client applications can publish and consume events through AMQP, Kafka, or HTTPS, with SDKs for .NET, Java, Python, JavaScript, Go, and C.
The service is offered in Basic, Standard, Premium, and Dedicated tiers. Basic is the entry tier, with one consumer group per event hub and maximum retention of one day. Standard adds Event Hubs Capture, Apache Kafka support, and Schema Registry. Premium adds resource isolation, included Capture, and maximum retention of 90 days. Dedicated provides a single-tenant cluster, included Capture, and maximum retention of 90 days. A 30-day free trial is available, while the product itself is paid. Pricing depends on Azure region, currency, agreement, and usage, so the plans are easier to compare by capability than by a fixed published starting price.
Its strongest fit is within the Azure ecosystem: Event Hubs Capture can send data to Azure Blob Storage or Data Lake Storage, while integrations include Azure Stream Analytics, Functions, Databricks, Synapse Analytics, and Event Grid. Schema Registry supports schema groups and compatibility management, and geo-disaster recovery and geo-replication options support distributed deployments. Choose Event Hubs when Azure integration, Kafka compatibility, and managed ingestion are central requirements. Teams needing longer retention on the entry tier, a product-specific unlimited free plan, or a narrower standalone streaming stack should evaluate alternatives.
