Our verdict on Confluent Cloud

Confluent Cloud is a cloud service for organizations building real-time data pipelines, event-driven applications, streaming analytics, and data integrations. It provides fully managed Apache Kafka clusters through web and API access, with support for AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Its audience is enterprises that want Kafka operations, stream processing, schemas, connectors, and governance in one managed environment rather than assembling each layer independently.

Pricing follows a freemium model with consumption-based billing and hourly resource accrual. The Basic plan costs $0 per month and includes serverless managed clusters, autoscaling Kafka resources, 80+ fully managed connectors, security and governance essentials, and support for the three major cloud providers. Standard starts at $385 per month and adds a 99.99% uptime SLA, infinite storage, audit logs, and throughput savings that scale with usage. Enterprise starts at $895 per month and adds private networking, GBps+ autoscaling, and mission-critical workload support. A 30-day free trial is also available, but paid costs can rise with resource usage and region.

The platform’s depth is its strongest differentiator. Schema Registry handles schema storage, validation, and compatibility management, while Confluent Cloud for Apache Flink supports stream processing. Catalog and lineage capabilities address governance, and integrations include Kafka Connect, Apache Flink, ksqlDB, REST Proxy, AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Client libraries and APIs cover Java, Python, Go, JavaScript, .NET, and C/C++. Enterprises needing governed, multi-cloud Kafka should consider Confluent Cloud; smaller teams seeking a low-cost paid starting point or a narrower event-streaming service may prefer an alternative.
